Blunt cardiac injury (BCI) is an injury to the heart resulting from blunt trauma, typically to the anterior chest wall. It can produce a variety of specific cardiac injuries, the most common being myocardial contusion, a bruise to the heart muscle. The right ventricle is most often affected due to its anterior anatomic position. BCI is frequently associated with other chest injuries such as rib fractures, pneumothorax, and heart valve injury.

Commotio cordis is a specific BCI condition seen in young male athletes that leads to sudden cardiac death with benign autopsy findings.
