Carotid artery dissection happens when a tear develops in the wall of one of the two main carotid arteries in the neck. This tear lets blood seep between the artery’s layers, forcing them apart. As a result, a clot can form, the artery can narrow, and blood flow to the brain may be reduced—potentially leading to a stroke. The condition is a major cause of stroke in young and middle-aged adults.
